Read below for the Mainnet Migration and KYC announcement on June 28th, 2022:

Since the majority of the network can submit their KYC to get ready for their Mainnet migration, the network has begun the migration process to onboard KYC’ed Pioneers to the enclosed Pi Mainnet blockchain. As stated in the new draft chapters of the updated whitepaper released on December 28, 2021 (December Whitepaper), the current Enclosed Network period is specifically designed to allow millions of Pioneers to complete their KYC and transfer their Pi to the Mainnet, while the community focuses on creating utilities and bootstrapping the ecosystem without any external distractions through building and using new Pi apps, transitioning Testnet apps to Mainnet and completing and improving ecosystem infrastructure.

If you have passed Pi KYC, you can complete all the items on the Mainnet Checklist right now to enable the transfer of your mobile Transferable Balance to Mainnet. Please tap “Mainnet Checklist” on the home screen to complete your pre-migration requirements.

Once you finish Steps 1-6 of your Mainnet checklist, a new Step 7 will become available to you. Completing this final step enables the Mainnet transfer to be queued for migration. Pi Network has made cryptocurrency accessible worldwide, allowing Pioneers to mine Pi on the phone with no fiat cost. It is a great success of the community to come to a moment where the mined Pi balance is ready to migrate to Mainnet.

After the checklist is completed, the Pioneer’s Transferable Balance will be queued for transfer to their wallet address on the Mainnet blockchain. After the migration, there will be a 14-day pending period during which Pioneers’ Pi balance in their Mainnet wallet will not be transferable yet by the Pioneer, allowing the network to conduct additional checks or course corrections if necessary to clear the transfer. Given the immutable nature of blockchain and the early period of the network migration process, a 14-day pending period is helpful to make sure people’s migrated balances are correct. When the pending period expires, the Pioneer will then be able to use their Pi as they wish within the Enclosed Pi Mainnet.

Transferable Balance

The following portions of your Pi Mobile Balance will constitute your Transferable Balance, eligible for the migration to Mainnet. Keep in mind that any remaining or newly accrued Transferable Balance will continue to be migrated after the first migration because the network will continue to have a cadence of automatic, ongoing migrations later.

  • Self-mined Pi (which accrues when you mine by yourself based on the base mining rate at the time of the mining session)
  • Portion of the Security Circle rewards that are attributable to KYC’ed Pioneers in your Security Circle
  • Rewards from app usage, node operation, or lockup

Pi mined through Referral Team rewards will be put on hold for migration at this time regardless of whether anyone on the Referral Team is KYC’ed or not. Generally, portions of Referral rewards attributable to different Referral Team members will only become Transferable Balance once the corresponding members get KYC’ed. Otherwise, it remains as Unverified Balance in the mobile app. Because calculating the network’s Referral rewards is computationally intensive and costly, it makes sense to compute such rewards when the network has more people KYC’ed. The reason that Referral Team rewards are computationally intensive is that it accounts for the concurrent mining of each specific Referring and Referred Pioneer pair, which can vary even within the same Referral Team. For the efficiency of the network, any Referral Team reward will, therefore, be processed and migrated at a later date when there are more KYC’ed Pioneers.

On the other hand, Security Circle rewards attributable to KYC’ed Pioneers will be transferred to Mainnet at this time. Keep in mind that the Transferable Balance displayed on the Mainnet screen in the Pi app does not currently include these Security Circle rewards. Therefore, the amount of Pi that migrates to Mainnet is expected to be higher than the currently displayed Transferable Balance if any member of your Security Circle has passed KYC. Future UI will update this displayed number to account for portions of Security Circle rewards that become transferable.

Finally, the KYC fee of 1 Pi will be deducted from your transferable balance, which will go to a validator pool for rewarding the Pi community’s human validator workforce.

After the initial transfer to the Mainnet, Pioneers can continue to mine Pi just as before in the app by making different types of contributions. Newly mined Pi will go through the same process of becoming Transferable Balance, ready for the next Mainnet transfer which will occur automatically when the network activates it at a later time.

How do Lockups work on Mainnet?

While the locked up Pi based on a Pioneer’s lockup settings (percentage and duration) will be transferred to the Mainnet blockchain visible in the Pioneer’s Mainnet wallet, their locked up Pi will not be transferable on the blockchain until the lockup duration time matures. The lockup duration set by the Pioneer begins at the end of the 14-day pending period.

There is an additional design to the lockup durations for a potentially better network effect. The longer durations, namely 1 year and 3 years, will end on a randomized, staggered basis. This is to avoid the situation where many Pioneers get their future long-term lockups released at the same time, given that they will migrate to the Mainnet blockchain at the same time. Specifically:

  • Pioneers with a 1 year lockup can get up to a 1-month “discount” on their lockup period, meaning their lockup can expire up to a month early on a random basis. However, all Pioneers will still benefit from the mining reward applicable to the 1-year lockup period through their actual lockup period. For example, if a Pioneer locked up 100 Pi for 1 year, the actual lockup on the blockchain may be in 11 month and15 days based on this randomization, instead of exactly 12 months.
  • Pioneers with a 3 year lockup can similarly get up to a 3-month discount while still benefiting from the mining reward applicable to the 3 year lockup period.

The amount of discount will be applied randomly across Pioneers. For example, some Pioneers will have their 1-year lockup end a month early, some 20 days early, some 5 days early, some right at the 1-year mark, and so on. Even if the lockup ends a month early, the Pioneer will be able to accrue lockup mining rewards at the rate applicable to the 1-year lockup period through their actual lockup period of 11 months.

After your initial Mainnet transfer, the lockup setting for your next transfer—duration and percentage—will remain the same as your current one and will be applied to your future migrations automatically, unless you change these settings. You can adjust the settings anytime between any two transfers to the Mainnet—the saved changes will be applied to any next transfer to the Mainnet, and it will not affect any previous lockups already transferred. Please refer to the December Whitepaper for details on the lockup reward calculation.

Reminders about the Mainnet migration

As you go through this exciting activity, please remember two key points:

  • While completing the checklist, it is essential that Pioneers use their correct wallet private key, which they store safely and not share with anyone else. The wallet is noncustodial, meaning that the network cannot recover your Pi if you lose your private passphrase or someone with access to your private passphrase steals Pi from your wallet.
  • Once the 14-day pending period expires and you have freed up Pi on your Mainnet wallet, all transactions you conduct on the Mainnet blockchain will be visible and irreversible.

Pi KYC Accessibility

As announced previously, the network KYC process is making good progress, allowing more than half of all Pioneers to submit KYC applications (though it will still take time for the network to submit, process and complete these KYC applications). This fact enables the network to start migrating KYC’ed Pioneers to the Mainnet since migrating the entire network to Mainnet also takes time. Migrated Pioneers can then start helping to bootstrap and build the ecosystem in the Enclosed Period of the Mainnet, while the KYC process continues to scale to enable more Pioneers to go through KYC and process unprocessed applications that have been submitted.

We understand that many Pioneers are eagerly waiting for their turn or for their applications to be processed. Below are ongoing measures that will help more Pioneers pass KYC soon.

  • Technical funnel improvements to handle the application and validation of more and more Pioneers at scale
  • Human validation power to continue growing and bootstrapping more countries and regions
  • Reducing the chance of false negatives of the ongoing funnel to pass more KYC applications, and reprocessing some submitted applications that are supposed to pass but were previously marked as negative
  • Solutions for KYC applications that may miss critical data from previous applications, including some Yoti KYC applicants and some pilot Pi KYC applicants:
    • For previous Yoti KYC applicants — the Pi Core Team has deployed a special fast-track Pi KYC flow for them to fill in missing data. For some Yoti KYC applicants experiencing issues with this flow, an additional feature is being designed to address these corner cases
    • For previous KYC Pilot applicants — the Pi Core Team is currently building a reprocessing mechanism to match pilot applications with current KYC requirements, and a resubmission feature described below to essentially match the chances that current KYC applicants get when submitting their applications. For example, if a photo or video upload fails, current applicants would get multiple chances to resubmit, which was not possible in the pilot version of the KYC app
    • A new resubmission feature is being developed and will be released soon to enable previous Yoti KYC and KYC Pilot applicants to resubmit a brand new application and get unstuck, if they choose so and do not want to wait for the custom solutions mentioned above, since the current improved and scaled Pi KYC solution can potentially process new applications within a short time
  • A process to support Pioneers with complex name appeals, which create complications in processing their KYC and may require additional human Validator help to resolve

Please note that for certain countries or regions, due to the Pioneers’ unique way of accessing the Pi Network, it takes longer and more complex procedures for the Pi KYC machine automation component to process their accounts, thus leading to their delayed receipt of KYC slots. Therefore, it is possible that these countries or regions have slower KYC onboarding than other regions.

Overall, for Pioneers who are still waiting for their chance to submit KYC, please be patient as the network continues to scale the KYC solution and solve the corner cases that apply to you.

Importance of the Mainnet Enclosed Network Period

As stated in the December Whitepaper, the current Enclosed Network period is specifically designed to allow the Pi Ecosystem time to transition onto the Mainnet blockchain, while millions of Pioneers pass KYC and new apps and utilities are built by community developers.

Consistent with the vision of the Pi network to enable a utility-based ecosystem, the Enclosed period also allows apps to deploy on Mainnet and create utilities for Pioneers. Pi apps will be able to switch from Testnet to Mainnet, to production mode for real Pi transactions. Apps released during this period will include those created by community developers and the Core Team. Moreover, new and improved developer engagement programs—such as continuous Hackathons and other developer programs—will be released to mobilize and incentivize more community development.

Pioneers who are both KYC’ed and migrated will be able to spend their Pi on Pi apps, boosting utilities creation and bootstrapping the Pi ecosystem before the Open Network. Some of such Pi apps will soon be available for Pioneers after the pending period post-migration, while more Pi apps from the community will be gradually onboarded. This gradual and deliberate ramp to Open Network will also help the apps, as well as the Pi Network, to uncover and resolve any glitches in the market and the technology.

While transactions between Pi apps and Pioneers and Pioneer-to-Pioneer transactions are allowed within Pi Network, the Enclosed Network period will have certain restrictions as listed in the “Restrictions in the Enclosed Network” subsection of the Roadmap chapter of the December Whitepaper, until the Open Network period begins.

Mar 2nd – 4:12am

Today Pi network put into effect the first version of rewards issuance formula that projects the supply limits for future mining rewards. The base mining rate consequently has dropped and will get adjusted monthly thereafter following the formula. “Read More” for details on how it works. Pioneers can boost their mining rate when the new mining mechanism takes effect on March 14. Stay tuned! Tap “Lockups” to set up your lockups today 🙂

On December 28, 2021, we launched the Mainnet along with new chapters of the updated Pi white paper (December Whitepaper). One chapter, “Token Model and Mining”, described Pi’s supply model, new mining mechanism, and mining rewards within the supply limit. Please use the December Whitepaper linked on the Mainnet Dashboard as a reference for the following announcement.

As previously announced, the network will follow the steps below to put the new mining mechanism in effect. These steps will be independent of and in parallel with the upcoming mass KYC verification and Pi balance migration to the Mainnet blockchain.

  • Effective today, March 1, 2022 – A declining rewards issuance formula will take effect. In particular, the systemwide base mining rate (B) will be reduced based on an estimated monthly supply limit where B stays constant for a month and declines every month. The mining mechanism otherwise stays the same until March 14.
  • Upcoming on March 14 (Pi day), 2022 – The new mining mechanism, which includes new rewards specified in the December Whitepaper, will take effect. Pioneers will be able to increase their individual mining rate by making newer, more diverse types of contributions to the network via Pi lockup, app usage, and node operations.

Announcing new mining rate and Rewards Issuance Formula

Today, on March 1, 2022, we’re announcing the first version of the Rewards Issuance Formula—the declining exponential function described below—whereby the systemwide base mining rate (B) is reduced based on a monthly supply limit. B has today decreased to 0.02367198839 Pi per hour, which will stay constant through March 2022 and decrease monthly thereafter. Note that the new base mining rate will take effect after the completion of your respective current mining sessions that still may use the old rate. This formula intends to ensure that Pioneer mining rewards are within the total supply limit of 65 billion allocated for mining rewards as announced in the December Whitepaper. This declining exponential function along with the new mining mechanism balances the network’s need for growth, accessibility, longevity, and scarcity. Additionally, it right-sizes the Pioneers’ rewards for contribution to the network.

Even though B is reduced, Pioneers will soon have many more avenues to make other types of contributions to the network and boost their individual mining rates. This, in fact, is one of the purposes of the new mining mechanism. On March 14 (Pi day), 2022, the new mining mechanism will take effect along with the new types of rewards: lockup, app usage, and node operation—as specified by their respective formulae in the December Whitepaper.

Together, the first version of the declining network rewards issuance formula and the upcoming new mining mechanism mark a major advancement in the development of Pi Network’s Token Model and Mining design during the Mainnet phase. These incremental steps further exemplify how the Enclosed Mainnet period offers the network opportunities to iterate on specific formulae based on ongoing findings as well as token modeling and simulations.

Please note that the declining exponential formula below is the first version of the Rewards Issuance Formula, as it is impossible to precisely predict the future data on Mainnet and from new mining. This first version was designed based on past data, simulations and best assumptions, such as the 35 billion remaining supply for future mining rewards, Pioneer lockups and overall ecosystem factors. For example, the 35 billion remaining Pi is estimated based on the currently available data about real Pioneers’ mobile balances. A more accurate figure will be determined by the speed of network KYC and how much Pi is migrated to the Mainnet in the future. Further data and continual simulations will help assess such underlying assumptions in the rewards issuance formula, and thus, may lead to the formula’s adjustment in line with the network’s objectives as explained above.

supply_limits (expressed in Pi/day) = exp ( − last_day_total_mining_rewards / 1220) • 35,000,000,000, where

  • supply_limits are the output of this formula that allocates a specific amount of Pi to each day for the indefinite time while making sure the total future issuance will not exceed the remaining available supply.
  • last_day_total_mining_rewards is equal to the total Pi mining rewards issued on the previous day,
  • 1220 is a tuning factor to be further tuned over the coming months, and
  • 35 billion is the estimated number of Pi available for Pioneers to mine going forward.

How is today’s B calculated?

The December Whitepaper stated that B will be dynamically adjusted to keep the mining rewards issuance within supply limits for a certain period of time. The time period could be yearly, monthly, daily, hourly, or even more granular. For simplicity, we are starting the dynamic B on a monthly basis, meaning that B will stay constant for a month and will be adjusted based on the rewards issuance formula and the network’s mining activities at the end of each month. Starting with a B that stays constant for a month helps Pioneers understand the implications of 1) new supply limits (effective today), 2) the new mining mechanism with new rewards (effective March 14th, 2022), and 3) a more dynamic nature of B (potentially in the future) one at a time, given that these concepts are complex and all have an effect on Pioneers’ mining rewards. At the same time, a monthly period is short enough to correct any potential over- or under-issuance of Pi deviating from the rewards issuance formula while B is stable long enough for Pioneers to follow along and adjust their contributions to the network to mine for rewards.

So, the new B effective today is calculated by summing up the daily supply_limits of the first month from the above rewards issuance formula and dividing it by 31 (number of days in March) for even daily allocation within the month and dividing it again by the sum of coefficients of mining rewards of all active Pioneers of the last day of February—including their multiples of Referral Team and Security Circles rewards, and their estimated multiples of lockups, App Usage and Node rewards in the new mining mechanism in March (Please refer to December Whitepaper: Section: Mainnet Mining Formula to understand how to calculate B). Similar iterations will occur each month going forward. In example, on April 1st, B will be recalculated based on the supply limit for the second month from this formula and the sum of all reward coefficients of all active Pioneers from the last day of March. This B will stay constant through April, and update again on May 1.

When B stays constant in a month, the total number of Pi actually mined every month varies with the actual total contributions of the actively mining Pioneers in that month. At the end of the month, the total number of Pi actually mined will be compared with the number initially projected by the formula. Any deviation between the two numbers each month will lead to a further adjustment on the remaining Pi supply, across the remaining indefinite mining period, along with any other types of adjustments explained above, e.g. the assumed 35 billion remaining mining rewards supply.

As such, the monthly B can potentially cause an over- or under-issuance of Pi, leading to a deviation from the rewards issuance formula. If such deviation on a monthly basis is constantly large, the network can move to a more dynamic version of the B model where the monthly issuance of Pi remains constant but B gets adjusted on a more granular time epoch basis. The shorter the time period for adjusting B to follow the formula, the less is the potential for over- or under-issuance against the targeted supply limits, and the less is the chance for deviation from the formula over that period. More data on Mainnet and the new mining mechanism will help examine the efficacy of the current monthly dynamic B and determine if a more dynamic version B is necessary.

What can Pioneers do?

Although the base mining rate has dropped, new mining rewards are coming soon. We will make another announcement on Pi Day March 14 to kick off the new mining mechanism and rewards, and further explain how Pioneers can increase their individual mining rates by making other types of contributions. Until then, you can continue to boost your individual mining rates for the next two weeks by:

  • continuing to mine like before to receive the new systemwide base mining rate,
  • completing your Security Circle to maximize Security Circle rewards,
  • inviting your friends to mine Pi to increase Referral Team rewards, and
  • reminding your existing Referral Team to mine.

In addition, Pioneers should set up their lockup configuration, see how lockups can boost their mining rate in the new mining simulation interface, and commit to a lockup configuration before the new mining mechanism takes effect on March 14. Please follow the “Lockups” button on the homescreen to set up your lockup configuration. The higher the lockup percentage and the longer the lockup duration, the higher the lockup mining boost will be.

Question: Will there be a mass KYC, or will it continue to roll out in batches?

Answer: Initially small batches and soon mass KYC, for the purpose of improving the system to scale for the mass KYC. Recently, we have been releasing small batches of slots within the kyc.pi app in the Pi Browser for upload of KYC documentation for testing, debugging purposes, algorithm and performance improvements. For example, we released a new version of the KYC app that contains liveness checks and document redaction preview to 50 more people per country. More batches will be released soon until mass KYC starts. Extra caution and iterations are applied to the development of the KYC app, as it deals with an important process of the network and important data of Pioneers. Once the improvements and scalability are completed, Pioneers will be able to go to the kyc.pi app to submit their KYC documentation.

Question: Will Pioneers be notified when KYC is widely available?

Answer: Yes. They will be notified in our announcement and also can be notified by their referral team members. Pioneers will be able to send a notification to their Referral Team and Security Circle members to prompt them to perform KYC. The Core Team will also post announcements that will remind users to upload their KYC documentation.

Question: When will Pi balances be transferred to their Mainnet wallets for Pioneers who have submitted KYC documentation?

Answer: Submitting documents only (e.g. KYC pilot participants) or even being authenticated as the person in the submitted documents, (e.g. Yoti KYC’ed), is only part of the Pi KYC process. Additional checks such as name matching, previous violations of Pi’s terms of service and policies and regulatory compliance verification will need to be performed, all of which will constitute a pass of the Pi KYC. Generally, after a Pioneer has submitted their KYC documentation, it will need to go through a verification process, which involves verification of one’s identity and compliance with Pi Network’s Terms of Service. For Pioneers that pass this verification process, their Pi balances will become transferable and get transferred to their Mainnet wallets in regular batches.

Question: How long will Pioneers have to wait for approval after submitting their KYC documentation?

Answer: The processing time can vary depending on a few factors. Pioneers that participated in the pilot KYC app through the Pi Browser will be the first to be processed after the human verifier functionality is in place, which will be released soon. The purpose of having the pilot KYC is not just for Pioneers to get approval but also to improve the KYC app itself. Once validators can verify applications in the KYC app, the progress of the application will depend on the availability of trustworthy validators per country, ranging from a few days to a few weeks. That’s why it’s important for the community to motivate enough validators to join the workforce and help verify Pioneers in their country once the validator portal is open. If a Pioneer has submitted a name update appeal, additional time may be required.

KYC results will also depend on your name matching with your Pi Account, screening against government AML and anti-terrorism sanctions list, and if the account has a scripting or policy-violation history.

Question: How will users be notified if they have passed KYC or not?

Answer: A Pioneer can check on their KYC status inside the Pi KYC app through Pi Browser, where they submitted the documents.

Question: What happens to those who do not pass KYC? Will their accounts be burned immediately?

Failure in KYC can result from multiple reasons. Different reasons may lead to different outcomes, e.g. another chance to resubmit KYC application, appeal or permanent rejection. Pi accounts will not be burned immediately. A grace period will likely be given for any resubmission and appeal cases, which will be announced later.

Mitteilung vom 19.2.2022

New mining release plan

On December 28, 2021, we launched the Mainnet along with new chapters of the updated Pi white paper (December Whitepaper). One chapter, “Token Model and Mining”, communicated Pi’s supply model, new mining mechanism, and mining rewards within the supply limit. Please use the December Whitepaper linked on the home screen as a reference for the following announcement.

As stated in the December Whitepaper, the supply for mining rewards is 65 Billion Pi, which includes rewards Pioneers have mined in the pre-Mainnet phase and rewards for future mining through the new mining mechanism. The new mining mechanism is meant to incentivize more types and amounts of contributions from Pioneers to the network necessary for its Mainnet phase. The network rewards issuance going forward and supply limits of a given time period will be based on a declining formula (rewards issuance formula).

The Core Team has been working on the rewards issuance formula through economic modeling and simulations. The first version of the specific formula will be released on March 1, 2022. On the same date, Pi Network will also adopt the first step of the new mining mechanism. Because the network rewards issuance formula is a declining function, the systemwide base mining rate (B) will be expected to decrease based on the calculation specified in the December Whitepaper. Thus, mine and remind your team to mine at a higher rate while you can before March 1.

The network adoption of the new mining mechanism will be independent of and in parallel with the mass migration to the Mainnet blockchain. New mining mechanism is composed of two major aspects: 1) supply limit of a given time period and 2) new mining rewards in the new mining mechanism. While KYC and Mainnet migration are ongoing, the network will concurrently follow the timeline below to put each aspect of the new mining mechanism in effect.

  • March 1, 2022 – The rewards issuance formula that defines the supply limit of a given time period will take effect. Systemwide base mining rate will be reduced based on the supply limit. The mining mechanism otherwise stays the same until March 14.
  • March 14 (Pi Day), 2022 – The new mining mechanism including the new types of rewards specified by their respective formulae in the December Whitepaper will take effect. Pioneers will be able to increase their individual mining rate by making diverse types of contributions to the network.

The new mining mechanism will usher in a new era for the network. Mine at higher rates while you can. Happy Mining!

Neuer Mining-Release-Plan

Accelerated Development of Pi Blockchain Yields Decentralized KYC Solution, 33 Million Engaged Users, and More on Path Towards Open Mainnet*

An Examination of the Social Cryptocurrency Reveals Numerous Recent Achievements and an Exciting Future

On March 14, 2022, Pi Network celebrated its 3rd anniversary with important announcements and updates. The network defined future plans and shared progress in terms of technology, product, and community growth since last year’s Pi Day.

Pi Network Growth March 14, 2021 – March 14, 2022

Pi Network had an amazing year of growth filled with accomplishments that fulfilled its roadmap objectives and grew the utility of the network. In the last year, Pi Network launched the Enclosed Mainnet, released three updated Whitepaper chapter drafts and advanced decentralization on the network by growing to over 10,000 active Testnet nodes. Additionally, the Pi Community grew from 15 million to over 33 million engaged users (referred to as “Pioneers” in the community).

In the same period, the Pi ecosystem has undergone evolution with launches and iterations of multiple PI Network apps and features including Pi KYC, Brainstorm, Pi Browser, Pi Wallet, Pi SDK, and Pi Blockexplorer.

Looking forward, Pi Network aims to accelerate the community mass KYC process, migrate its users’ balances to the Mainnet, develop an ecosystem of apps on its platform, and move to Open Mainnet.

Enclosed Mainnet Launch

The Enclosed Network period of Mainnet of the Pi blockchain went live on December 28, 2021. Here, a firewall prevents any unwanted external connectivity to the Mainnet. This Enclosed Mainnet period allows time for millions of Pioneers to pass KYC and the community to build utilities-based Pi apps. The Enclosed Network period also provides an opportunity for the network to test, gather data, and iterate on the Mainnet and the Pi Ecosystem before the future launch of the Open Network.

Updated Whitepaper Draft

Updated Whitepaper chapters were released along with the Mainnet launch. These chapters detail the Pi Network Mainnet roadmap, new mining rewards, and token model. The chapters are in draft form and continue to be updated based on community feedback and data gathered during the Enclosed Mainnet period.

In the last year, the network grew to over 10,000 active Testnet Nodes. Additionally, there are tens of thousands of Pioneers operating the Node desktop application each day, on the waiting list to run the blockchain container. While not all Nodes run the Testnet consensus container, they all do provide the network with important data and infrastructure to enable multiple iterations of the Node software and Testnet. Once the Open Network period of Mainnet launches, such Community Nodes will be able to participate in securing the Pi Mainnet blockchain.

The network conducted its first #buildPi2gether Hackathon between June 28, 2021 and September 20, 2021 with thousands of Pioneers participating. Pioneers submitted many projects with a wide variety of use cases. A select few won rewards for their exceptional contributions.

Development of the novel Pi KYC App began and continued throughout the year. The app was built to be a decentralized scalable KYC solution that combines machine automation and crowdsourced human verification. This KYC solution optimizes for accuracy and privacy while achieving accessibility, scalability for millions of people, and wide coverage of diverse populations. The team worked on several features and versions between testing rounds such as improved obfuscation algorithms which hide a Pioneer’s data from human validators, liveness checks which verify that a real person is applying, improved processing speed to ensure timely uploading of Pioneers’ documents, and much more. With multiple testing rounds completed, Pi Network has now made the KYC app (see Pi Day Announcements below!) available on a large scale.

Ecosystem Tools

In 2021, Pi Network developed and released a growing ecosystem of apps and features that will support Pioneers as Mainnet further evolves.

The Pi Browser was launched in April 2021 to create a more open and direct Pi Utilities platform for Pioneers and community developers to interact with and build upon. Within the Pi Browser, Pioneers can access the Pi KYC application and other apps being created by community app developers. As the ecosystem develops more and more apps with real use cases and utility, Pioneers will be able to spend Pi on the apps of their choice.

There have been many feature enhancements and additions to the Pi Browser since its launch, such as the addition of notifications and deep linking. New features will continue to be built and rolled out over the coming year.

The Pi Wallet was announced on Pi Day 2021, offering Pioneer’s a noncustodial method to hold their Pi. At release, the Wallet allowed Pioneers to interact with the Testnet blockchain by creating Test-Pi transactions. To help the community transition to Mainnet, the Pi Wallet has been updated so that Pioneers can switch between viewing the Mainnet and Testnet blockchains and get ready to receive their Pi balance on the Mainnet.

The Brainstorm App—a place for Pioneers to propose Pi Apps ideas, join existing projects, and engage with other Pioneers to join their projects—launched just prior to Pi Day, 2021. Throughout the year, the Brainstorm App saw many updates and feature changes to host the large-scale global online hackathon and UI improvements based on community feedback. More updates to Brainstorm will be implemented in 2022, so keep an eye out for some exciting news which will be announced later this year!

The Pi SDK, which enables developers to build applications that integrate with the Pi Ecosystem, was released on Pi2Day (June 28), 2021. This gave developers the ability to communicate with the Pi Blockchain to create payments and with Pi servers to validate consented information from Pioneers. Additional features are being planned for the upcoming year which will give developers increased functionality within their applications.

The Pi Blockexplorer first launched in October 2021 to provide visibility to the Testnet. Since the Mainnet launch, Pioneers have also been able to view transactions, accounts and blocks on the Mainnet blockchain. Pioneers can check their Pi balance, the status of a transaction, and the general state of the Pi blockchain.

Pi Day Announcements

Pi Day 2022 brought some exciting news! The Pi Core team announced the release of two important new features: (1) the long awaited rollout of mass KYC solution, and (2) the new Pi mining mechanism that allows more diverse mining rewards based on lockup settings, app usage, and node hosting.

Pi KYC applications are being offered as they become available, allowing Pioneers around the world to submit applications on a large scale, with the number of application slots expected to ramp up steadily. Pioneers will receive an in-app alert when they receive a slot to submit their application. These slots are chosen randomly and are not being assigned in any order. We understand that all Pioneers desire to submit their application and move to Mainnet, but please be patient as slots become available to all Pioneers to avoid system clutter when processing the millions! Given that machine automation is being scaled as needed, the network KYC speed now primarily depends on how many good human validators there are in each local community to process the human verification step of the KYC solution. So join the workforce of human validators and help speed up the KYC of the network.

The Pi KYC solution combines machine automation and human verification in order to accomplish accurate and efficient KYC for everyone. Machine automation will be responsible for image processing, text extraction, fake ID detection, liveness check and image comparison. The human verification flow, where pre-approved human verifiers check the redacted data of other Pioneers’ KYC applications, has also been released on this Pi Day.

Another major announcement is that Pioneers can now receive new mining rewards that increase individual mining rates resulting from diverse types of contributions to the network such as app usage, Node operations, and Pi lockups, in addition to pre-Mainnet rewards such as security circles and referrals. Locking up Pi while ecosystem utilities and use cases develop, engaging with Pi apps on a regular basis, and hosting a large network of Nodes are all vital to both the security and decentralization of the Pi blockchain and the stability and utility of the Pi Ecosystem.

Coming soon

Over the next few months, Pi Network has several upcoming releases that Pioneers should be aware of.

The KYC app is self-sufficient within the ecosystem. It costs Pioneers 1 Pi to process their application. Further, fully KYC’ed Pioneers will soon be able to apply to become KYC validators for their country or region after agreeing with Service Terms of the app, going through a tutorial to train their validation skills, and being peer-vetted by trusted validators on their initial work. Since these validators’’ work is constantly cross-validated to prevent bad actors, providing consistently inaccurate verification will lead to removal from the workforce pool. Good validation work will be rewarded with Pi paid by KYC applicants.

Node Consensus Container

During the Enclosed Network period, the Consensus Container for the Testnet will be opened for all Community Nodes. This will offer Pioneers who want to maintain a copy of the ledger the chance to set up and monitor the performance of a node. Doing so is important for Pioneers to verify that their nodes are able to effectively handle the parameters of the Testnet blockchain. This will help ensure that Pioneers are able to host the Pi Mainnet blockchain with their Nodes once the firewall is removed and Open Network begins.

Further Pi Ecosystem Development

Pi Network is ramping up its efforts to grow community app development on the Pi Browser to create real utilities and use cases within the Pi Ecosystem. This will include possible future Hackathons and other developer initiatives to help bring developers onto the Pi Developer platform. There will also be Pi apps developed by the Core Team.

Mainnet Migration

After a critical mass of Pioneers pass KYC verification, the network will begin transferring the KYC-verified Pioneers’ mobile-mined balances to the Enclosed Mainnet blockchain. These Pioneers will then be able to use their Pi within the internal Pi Ecosystem. In order to qualify for Mainnet Migration, Pioneers will need to complete all the steps on the Mainnet Checklist located inside the Mainnet tab in the Pi App. This includes creating a Pi Wallet through the Pi Browser, choosing a lockup configuration, and submitting and passing a KYC application.

Open Network

After mass Mainnet migration occurs and the Pi Ecosystem is sufficiently developed, Pi Network will move to the Open Network period of Mainnet, removing the firewall from the Enclosed Network period. This will allow for external connectivity, e.g., to other networks and to anyone who wants to connect to the Pi Mainnet. Removal of the firewall will allow direct access to the blockchain, and community Mainnet Pi Nodes will be able to run the Mainnet blockchain.

Pi Network had robust growth and development during the last Pi year. There is excitement in the community about the upcoming Mainnet migration, development of the app ecosystem, and move to Open Network. Unlike other cryptocurrency networks, Pi has had vital community support from the very beginning of its journey. Pioneers helped secure and grow the network as they mined Pi on their phones and have been providing important feedback as the network evolved and iteratively improved on its technology and product. With so much to look forward to, the next Pi year is critical and calls for Pioneers to contribute even more diversely to the network in order to make it a success.

Was ist Pi?

Thanks everyone for your Hackathon midpoint submissions. Based on these submissions, the Core Team has drafted this guidance article to guide members of the Pioneer community who wish to build apps on Pi.
Our overall goal with the Hackathon is to foster community development of Pi apps and ecosystem that will substantiate use cases of the Pi Blockchain. We want to 1) enable community developers to create Pi apps without having to build the whole system or infrastructure from scratch (e.g., authentication, Pi Wallet) and, at the same time, 2) ensure that Pioneers who use Pi apps will have a streamlined, uniform experience in the Pi Browser.
“Pi apps” refer to any app that integrates Pi into their app mechanisms, i.e., having part of their app logic interact with the Pi blockchain (currently Pi Testnet), such as payments. In order to qualify for participating in the Pi Hackathon, Pi apps have to implement Pi integration using our SDK, including user authentication and Pi payments.
Specifically, we require that you:
Build a web app and integrate the Pi SDK into it to be accessible through the Pi Browser
Use the Pi.authenticate() method of the SDK to verify users instead of asking for a separate login. This will also help you leverage Pi community user base and our KYC implementation in the future.
Use the Pi.createPayment() method of the SDK to access the Pi Wallet of the Pi Browser instead of creating an external wallet
Once Mainnet launches, Pi apps using our SDK will automatically work on the public Pi Blockchain and will have access to:
The ability to tap into our over 20 million crypto-ready user base
Existing Pi infrastructures such as wallets and user verification
Other features the Core Team will make available over time
Hosting your app on the Pi Server through Pi App Engine (optional, by Core Team’s discretion)
A consistent user experience on the Pi Browser
